THE IMPORTANCE OF BREATHING...

THE IMPORTANCE OF BREATHING…

Dear friends,

Whether we have, or have not known it and haven’t done it yet, it is never too late to breathe…

Q: How comes? We would ask, we’re still alive, which means we are breathing.

A: Yes, true, we are breathing but very shallowly using our chest muscles, not the effective abdominal ones, especially the diaphragm. Also, we have numerous lengthy periods of apnea during the daily waking state and while sleeping and dreaming during the night. In other words we’re holding our breath usually due to an intense preoccupation in succeeding with an activity, solving a problem, or in order to get to a destination…LOL!

However, after completing such tasks we’re faced with others, to no end…

Many of us know too well these facts, yet we do not practice…

Knowing and not doing is yet not knowing…

Practicing daily and hourly what we know, we will achieve…

To REALLY live, we must breathe and effectively…

Newborn babies don’t have similar worries as adults do, that is why they breathe, and breathe effectively, activating the main muscle of breathing—the diaphragm. We can observe closely how a baby’s tummy moves rhythmically, which indicates effective diaphragmatic breathing… The baby does not stop for too long to totally breathe (apnea), nor will it breathe shallowly…

Q: Why discussing breathing of all our functions?

A: Simply, I can attest as a medical doctor, holistically oriented, that breathing is the main fundamental of living, like turning the ignition in a car, is likewise in having the car running…

It appears that God/The Higher Power within and everywhere gave us life by breathing in Adam’s nostrils… as the nose is for breathing, while usually mouth is for other functions…God did not give Adam mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, LOL!...

All organs in the organism are awakened, strengthened and healed through the process of breathing…

A great number of dis-eases are triggered and/or worsened by periods of apnea (lack of breathing) as I wrote in one of my previous blogs, or by shallow breathing…especially, as the body gets older…

A few examples are as following:

Hiatal hernia associated with Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Dis-ease (GERD). That is because, without sufficient and effective breathing, especially growing older, the diaphragm—the main breathing muscle weakens… In addition, a sedentary life, when we don’t have many activities, predisposes us also to overeat, or eat the same quantities of food we were habituated to eat at a young age when the metabolism—ability to burn food was twice or trice stronger… That obviously results in food becoming fat, depositing in the body and dangerously in the arteries, causing occlusion. Notwithstanding, a big stomach protruding through an enlarged opening in the weakened muscle of the diaphragm into the thoracic cavity greatly contributes to GERD… Imagine what happens! Now, the gastric acid cannot be contained in the stomach, as the junction above with the esophagus, which is situated in the chest cavity, loses the constrictive ability due to diaphragmatic weakness…

Thus, the gastric acid attacks the lining of the esophagus that unlike the stomach that has a protective mucus layer, was not made by the Higher Power to behave thereof… The symptoms are those of heartburn, chest and back pain, especially during efforts of lifting things, as they strain further the weakened diaphragm opening (called hiatus)…and other symptoms…

Other symptoms are…shortness of breath, due to pressure on the lungs by the herniated content of the abdomen protruding into the chest cavity through the weakened diaphragm…

Lack of proper oxygenation of the brain, heart and kidneys, and other organs results in damage to their tissues…

As the brain is the most sensitive to lack of oxygen, being our “switchboard operator,” storage of information, and processor of thoughts and emotions, it stands to reason the mental and emotional problems will ensue, in addition to dealing with the stressors of every day living…

Q: How to avoid apnea 24/7, and how to breathe effectively?

A: Simply, read and practice the science of breath from books of specialty including those of Yoga… Practice Yoga whenever possible and exercise an hour a day…Eat daily several small meals of nutritious food, mostly wild fish, organic vegetables and fruits, drink plenty of clean water from natural source if all possible… Ingest small meals in order not to enlarge the stomach too much and give it a chance, together with the gut, to utilize their limited amount of digestive enzymes, for one meal… Go to sleep with plenty of positive thoughts and the stomach empty for two-three hours prior to retiring to bed…

Q: Is there any practical advice meanwhile, how to avoid apnea and breathe effectively?

A: Yes, no mater where we are and in what activity we are involved, we MUST refrain from literally holding our breath until we finish that task at hand… To breathe effectively, we should every several minutes watch our stomach, LOL! If it doesn’t move, we should move it, LOL!... Namely, for example, we should take a deep breath counting to 6 and breathe out counting to 8, for an estimate of about 30-60 seconds… Practicing this breathing exercise during the day regularly, we’ll achieve very good health… and as a big bonus a CONDITIONED REFLEX WILL BE FORMED AND REINFORCED DAILY, namely, to avoid the more dangerous sleep apnea and shallow breathing, during our time needed rest at night, which is so important to promote good health… An extra bonus will result in inducing more positive and creative, problem-solving dreams, as otherwise, dreams may burden us with our life’s destructive problems, making us restless, rather than life constructive solutions that make us content, refreshed and rested with an average of 8-hour sleep period…

Naturally, we should practice a positive affirmation/prayer prior to going to sleep, to the effect of having very creative, constructive, problem-solving, refreshing and resting dreams, waking up in the morning also very refreshed and rested with the necessary length period of sleep…

Q: And now, knowing and practicing all above, will we all be healthy all of the time?

A: Most of the time… LOL, and don’t forget that my advise does not preclude consulting with your own physician when you deem necessary…

Love and Light,
